Vadodara is located at the banks of the Vishwamitri River. The river got its name on the name of a renowned saint Rishi Vishwamitra. Formerly Vadodara was also known as Chandravati on the mane of its ruler’s raja Chandan and Viravati. Later it came to be known as Vadpatra as there are number of banyan trees located on the banks of the river Vishwamitri. Later the present name of the city Baroda or Vadodara was derived from the name Vadpatra. Vadodra is a historic city which was once capital of the Baroda residency and also it was a princely state of India under the Bombay Presidency.
